FPee “Times”Speciai< Wire.] A Bad Christmas-Box. Wellington, Jan. 6. A boy named Taylor, three years old, was Severely burnt on Christmas Eve by bis night dress accidentally catching lire. He lies in a precarious condition. A Raid on the Infants. The infant 10 weeks old of Mrs Gosling was found dead in bed this morning. It is supposed to have been overlaid in bed by its mother during the night. The West Coast Bine. Christchurch, Jan. 6. A deputation, including the Mayor of Greymouth, waited on the Premier this morning in reference to the construction of a railway to the West Coast. They explained that they proposed to undertake the work, provided the Government made a grant of land on the line of railway. The Premier promised, to bring the matter before the Government at the earliest opportunity. Journalistic. A new weekly society journal called “ Liberty” is announced to appear on Saturday next. Cricket. Several tradesmen have offered trophies in connection with the cricket match with the Australian Eleven versus Canterbury. Another Insurance Benefit. A suspicious fire occurred at Papanui last night, whereby an unfinished house was destroyed. The insurance was £4OO in the National office. An enquiry is to be held. Seamen’s Wages on the Rise. A notice is posted up in the new Custom house, Lyttelton, urging seamen to refuse to ship in vessels bound to London under £lO a month, or £3O for the run home.
