The racing was good, the attendance large : but unfortunately the rider of Libeller (P. Nolan) lost his life. The following are the events: — Maiden Plate of 80 sovs, with a sweep of 2 sovs each. Mr J. Smith’s Tim Whiffler, 3yrs, Bst < Mr Leonard's Kenilworth, 33TS, Bst 2 Mr Bobbett’s Woolbroker, 3yrs, Bst 3 Betting—G to 4 agst Kenilworth, 2 to 1 agst Tim Whifller, Rosarina, and Woolbroker, 4 to I agst the others. Tim ran well, and his jockey helped him to win the race by half a length. There was little betting on the totalisator .in the paddock, but on that outside £42 was totalled, dividing £4 Is Gd for the winners. Free Handicap, of 50 sovs, with a swoop of 2 sovs ; distance, 1 mile. Mr Fanner’s Parawhenua, 4yrs, 7st 1 Mr Walters’ blander filly, 2yrs, sst 71b 2 Mr Bates’ Hilda, 3yrs, Gst 111 b ... 3 Time—lmin 50secs. The total isator in the paddock had £2B in, £ll on the winner, dividing £2 ss. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 70 sovs with a sweep of 2 sovs ; distance, 2{ miles, over nine flights of hurdles. Mr Gallagher’s Harry Mount, aged 9st 7lbs ... ... ... ... 1 Mr Butler’s The Agent, aged ... 2 Lonchand and Mignonette also ran. Lone Hand was backed at C to 4 ; oven money was laid on Agent; 5 to 1 against Harry Mount; and 10 to 1 against Mignonette. Lone Hand led to the first hurdle, Harry Mount was the iirst to clear the second hurdle, but he became disgusted at the back of the course. Mignonette having fallen at the third hurdle, was disposed of. Coming into the straight Lone Hand and Agent challenged Harry for lead. They appeared to rise together at the last hurdle, when, in a manner which to a great number was uncountable, Harry fell back and Loue Hand won ly a length, Agent four lengths behind. A protest was lodged against Lunn, Lonehand’s rider, for unfair riding, the allegation being that he struck Harry Mount’s rider. The evidence of Captain Walmsley and other witnesses was most positive and Lone Hand was disqualified, Mr Lunn then lodged a protest against Hodgson, the rider of Hany Mount, on the ground that he tried to force Lonehand off the course, but after hearing the evidence, the protest was dismissed. Auckland Cup Handicap, 300 sovs' with a sweepstake of 10 sovs each added ; second horse to receive £2O out of the stakes; and the third horse to save his stakes ; 24 miles. Mr Lance’s Foul Play, aged, Bst 121 b ... 1 Mr Smith’s Maid of honor, 43 7 rs, 7st 11b 2 Mr Edgar’s Ariel, aged, Bst Gib ... 3 Mr Walters’ Libeller, 43'Ts, 7st 21b ... 0 Mr Horsfall’s King Quail, syrs, Gst 121 b 0 Mr Mitchelson’s Vampire, aged, Gst 121 b 0 Mr McKerron’s Gelding, 4yrs, Gst 101 b 0
Mr Hunt’s Yatapa, aged, Gst 71b, also ran. Better, Lara, Grand Duchess, Rewi, Kenilworth, Tim Whittier, Lonehand, Rosarina, and Golden Crown were scratched.
Betting—G to 4on Foul Play, 4to 1 agst King Quail, Maid of Honour, and Yatapa, 8 to 1 agst Vampire, 12 to 1 agst the others. This, the chief event of the meeting, was made remarkable in two ways, it was made a dead certainty for one horse and it resulted in a fatal accident. A fair start was effected, Libeller going off with a slight lead, but at the turn
out of the straight Yatapa went to the front, \vith King Quail third. On passing the stand after the Jirst round, Yatapa led, with Libeller second, Maid of Honor third, Vampire fourth, King Quail fifth, Ariel sixth, Foul Play seventh. Then the pace mended, and the racing was fast. Foul Play passed the others in rapid succession at the back of the course, the last to surrender being Yatapa. Here Libeller and King Quail came to grief, resulting in one of the most disastrous occurrences at any of the Auckland race meetings. From the best evidence it appears that Libeller fell with his rider Nolan, and King Quail M'ith Carrington fell on top of them. Nolan Mas killed on the spot. Carrington is recovering. In the meantime the race went on, and the favorite won as he liked, with Maid of Honor second, Ariel third. Time—drain IGsces. Railway Plate of 50 sovs ; for two-year-olds 6st 9lbs; three-year-olds Bst libs ; four-year-olds, 9st slbs. six and aged, 9st 11b. Distance, -} mile.
