Peters ... 2 The ball was held in Mr H. Green’s grain store, the large hall, which was prettily decorated with Rowers and evergreens, being devoted to the dancing, a smaller apartment making a capital refreshment room. There was a large attendance, including a great many ladies, the members of the Friendly Societies appearing in their regalia. Mr F. C. Smithson officiated as M.C., and Mr C. Patten supplied the music, including a number of entirely new selections. The ball may be said to have been a great success, and dancing
was kept up with much spirit until the wee sma’ hours. TEMUKA ANNUAL BOXING DAY SPORTS. Stewards —Messrs James Blythe, Robert Donn, Henry Dunford, Joseph Whitehead, and James Davie. Hon Sec. —Mr Win. 11. Uprichard. A large gathering of spectators was present at these annual sports yesterday. Music Was supplied by the Volunteer Drum and Fife Bund. Smith, scratch ... 3 Five others ran. 150 Yards Handicap, for boys under IG. R. Lavery, scratch ... 1 J. Ollivier, syds ... ... 2 J. Blyth, 7yds ... ... 3 Three others started. Running High Jump. R. Chute (4ft Sin) ... 1 M. Collins and D. G. Waddel also competed. 250 Yards Handicap. E, S. Smith, scratch ... 1 S. Mcßratney, 10yds ... 2 A. G. Oldfield, and D. G. Waddel also competed. This was a grand race, and was won by two yards. 100 Y'ards Handicap, for girls under IG. P. Davis ... ... ... 1 C. Wyatt .;. ... ... 2 About 20 started and all came home in a cluster. Smith, scratch ... 1 J, Mcßratney, 30yds ... 2 T. Greaves, 20yds 3 Wallace, Waddel, and Oldfield also started. Won by 5 yards. Married Woman’s Race, 100 yards. Mrs Davis 1 Mrs Cope 2 Won by a skirt. Quarter Mile Handicap Hurdle Race, over 8 flights of hurdles and a water jump. G. Mcßratne}', 10 yds ... 1 E. S. Smith, syds 2 Five others started. Oddfellows’ 200 Yards Handicap Race. W. Smith, 18yds ... ... 1 E. Smith 12yds ... ... 2 Three others competed. Won by 4 yards. ALBURY SPOUTS. These sports did not excite much attention the entries being very limited. The 100yds event was won by P. Bray, G. Gordon second ; 440yds hurdle race was won by T. Gordon ; J, McDonald and Bray divided the prize for putting the stone ; the 440yds flat race was won by T. Gordon, Bray second. WAIMATE CALEDONIAN SPORTS. The sixth annual gathering was held in Cameron’s paddock, Waimate j-ester-day. About 2000 were present. Plenty of music was contributed by the local brass band and the sports were most enjoyable. The first prizetakers were as follows : Heavy Hammer (no swinging)—A. Smith, 7Gft Gin. Hop, Step, and Jump—Cummings, 40ft B,\in. Putting the Heavy Ball—Chalmers. Bagpipe Music—P. Nicholson. 200 Yards Race—A. Dalgleish. Putting Light Hammer—S. Smith, BGft Jin. County Race (440 yards)—Murphy. Running High Jump—Austin. Irish Reel—Keating. Tossing the Caber—Smith and Chalmers, equal. Wrestling (Cumberland style)— Fleming. Highland Reel—Murphy. Standing High Jump (Ift 4in)—Little and Metcalfe, equal. Putting Light Ball—Chalmers. Grand Champion Race (440 yards)— A. Dalgleish. Best Dressed Highlander (Highland costume) —J. Murray, Highland Fling (in costume) —J. Murray. Vaulting with Pole—T. McAuliffe, 10ft.
