Wellington has received a consignment of measles per Northumberland. The passengers have been isolated.
The eldest daughter of the Rev. 11. McKenney, of Waiharangi, has had her collar bone broken by an equestrian flight. A £2OOO tangi is being held at Hawke’s Bay over Tarcha, an old Maori chief. This is where the money goes.
The s.s. Eingarooma, freighted with excursionists, got her nose fast in the mud at Picton yesterday. Mr J. L. Fleming, of Fleming and Hcdley, the well-known Oamaru Auctioneers was knocked down by a horse at the Heathcote races yesterday and seriously injured.
The depositions of the man Kerison, who was shot by Gibson at Prebbleton, were taken yesterday'. He is still in a serious state, and the bullet cannot be found. Gibson’s revolver was found planted in the hedge, all the chambers being re-loaded.
At the II.M. Court this morning, before His Worship the Mayor, a resident was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and a former conviction fordrunkenness being proved he was sentenced to forty-eight hours imprisonment. Another toper failed to appear when called, and was lined 10s in default.
Here is something for the imitation of our athletes : —At the late athletic sports in Carrick-on-Huir, Mr P. Davin, the celebrated Irish athlcte.jumped 6 feet 24 indies the jump having been measured from the centre of the bar to the ground, the bar having been tested with a spirit level. This is an unparalleled feat, and exceeds by r onc inch Mr Daviu’s great jump at Kilkenny,of 6 feet 14 inches.
The members of the South Canterbury Yeomamy Cavalry will rusticate during the New Year holiday’s at Eangiora. This morning a large assembly of tearful widows and orphans assembled at the railway station to see them off by the early train. The cavalcade which was gaily caparisoned was commanded by Quarter Master Sergeant McGuinness, who appeared in gorgeous uniform. The company included Captain Turner, Y. S. Durham, Troopers Wood, Lecertwood, McKerrow,Stewart, Pelvin,Ravenhill, Murphy’, Lindsay', and Trumpeter McGuiness. The train moved off amidst waving of handkerchiefs and neighing of horses to the tune of “ the girl I left behind me,” which drew forth a wail from the widows and orphans. The members will camp out for several days, during which they will receive field exercise.
A fatal fire occurred yesterday at Bennett’s Albion Hotel, Napier; At an early hour the hotel was discovered to be on fire, and it was supposed that all the inmates were rescued, though one was so drunk that he had to be lowered by ropes, being incapable of helping himself. The Fire Brigade got' the fire under after about £3OO worth of damage was done, one wing being gutted. The firemen in going through the rooms then found the body of a man named Hmailey', a shepherd, who had just come to town There was no knob on the handle of the door inside his room and thus he could not escape. He was very little burned, evidently dying from suffocation. The insurances on the building were £SOO in the Standard, £BOO in the New Zealand; and £SOO in the Union. The stock is not insured.

Collins and Co., auctioneers, on Frida}', 81st December, at 8 p.m. Early application is necessary to obtain tickets. The race will be run in Melbourne on New Year’s Day, 1881, at 2 p.m. Consultors only, on production of their tickets, will be admitted to the drawing.—Anvr.
