Sydney, Nov, 20. The Mayor of Sydney and the “Morning Herald ” have received from the Irish Land League cable messages asking them to publish the fact that the Lord Mayor of Dublin has opened a subscription through the “ Freeman’s Journal” in order to secure a fair trial for Parnell and others, who are about to be prosecuted for participating in the land agitation. The trials will commence immediately, and the expenses of the defence will be enormous. Similar cablegrams have been received in Melbourne. The death sentences on Peter I’chx, for murder at Stanthorpe ; Hampson, fur wounding with intent to kill, at Dcniliquin ; and Walker, for murder at Tamworth, have been commuted to imprisonment for life. The condition of Mr Norton, Police Magistrate at Dubbo, recently shot by his paramour, is extraordinary, lie is paralysed and speechless, the bullet in his skull remains undiscovered, and he continues in a state of high vitality-and cheerfulness. The elections are about half through. Tins proceedings were generally monotonous. A determined effort was made to secure the ejectment of Parkes for East Sydney, resulting in his being elected ‘by a bare majority. There has been considerable personation. VICTORIA. Mkujouk.vk, Nov. 2-4. The Ivelly-Gaunson episode has now been brought fairly before the Assembly by a petition from Ballarat. Mr Orkney has given notice of motion respecting the removal of Gaunt-on from the Chairmanship of Committees, a proceeding which is not favorably regarded by
the Reform League party. 1100 resilents of Ballarat signed the petition. Queensland. The publisher of the “ Australian ” lewspapcr, against whom a verdict of L’-SOO was given for libelling Lukin, ‘‘liter of the “Courier,” has filed his schedule. Six Caledonian escapees arrived at i'razor’s Island oil Nov. 24. Four were french, one Spanish, and one Italian. Ihey made a good passage in IS days, f or the lust three days they had no pro. visions or water. In reference to the anxiety' 1 expressed relative to the safety of Ernest Giles’ exploring party, it is now stated that Giles is in Brice and Maurice’s employment, and has instructions to ride over a largo extent of leased country. He has a number of camels and ample provisions.
