HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The pupils of the Timaru High School held their first annual sports under most favorable auspices to-day. The weather was everything that could be desired—plenty of sunshine with a cool atmosphere. The scone of the contests was at the rear of the school, on what we presume is the playground, a portion of which had been mowed, and was in capital condition for the running. Seated in a semicircle at the top of the arena, wore a choice display of materfamilias and other visitors, for the athletes were patronised by “ their uncles and their cousins and their sisters and their aunts.” Mr Dawson the Rector of the school took a conspicuous part in arranging the events, and contributing to the pleasure of the recreations. Several leading citizens put in an appearance, including the Yen. Archdeacon Harper who appeared to have some difficulty in refraining from an active participation in the games of the juveniles. The boys were generally dressed in appropriate racing costume and the} 7 entered spiritedly into the different contests. Mr Stewart acted as judge and Mr McGuire as starter.
