THE MELBOURNE CUP.

Few races have created greater excitement than the Melbourne Cup race which came off yesterday afternoon. For the last day or two Grand Flaneur was undoubtedly the favorite, his triumph, as winner of the Derby on Saturday last, having assigned him a foremost place in the betting lists. Progress was also a favorite with many. The faith reposed in Mata for several weeks seriously declined. Grand Flaneur is a three-year-old colt by Yattondon, out of First Lady, and owned by Mr W. A. Long. In addition to his recent performances he won the Normanby Stakes, 5 furlongs, at the V.R.C. Meeting on New Year’s day, carrying Bst 101 b. Time —1 min. secs. Progress is by Angler, out of Coquette, and has been a favorite since he carried off the Geelong Cup a few months ago. The third horse, Lord Burghlcy, liashad a successful career on the turf. Wo append a list of the winners of the Melbourne Cup up to the present ;

Wo arc indebted to the “ Lyttelton Times” for the following- detailed account of the Cup race : The events previous to the Cup were not of an interesting character, but as the great race approached the excitement became intense, The chief favorites were Progrsss and Grand Flaneur ; then came Lord Ihirghlcy and Mata, liesides these, Richmond, Napper Tandy and Auckland were much fancied, but the ring- had laid so heavily on the favorites that the betting was almost paralvsed. Mata since his arrival has been greatly fancied, and would have been the worst winner for the ring, for lie carried no less than E 70,000 of jmblic money. After the preliminary canter, in which Crand Flaneur, Lord liurghlev, and Progress were most admired” 22 horses took up their positions for the Cup. Mr W. A. Near the bridge Riverton shot to the front,followed by Totalisator Napper Tandy, Lothair, Grand Flaneur, Woodlands, Mata, Chester, Martmdalc, Auckland, Rivalry, Richmond, Secundus, Banter, as named, Darriwell absolutely tailing off. Near the abbatoirs Mata came up outside Grand Flaneur, Progress, and Lord Burghlcy-—all looking dangerous. Filtering the straight the last named was leading, with "Progress and Grand Flaneur close up, followed by Auckland, Richmond, Chester, Mata, Riverton, Martindalc, and Wandering Jew; Rivalry and Secundus being the two last. Coming home Grand Flaneur went to the front about two hundred yards from the winning post, and came in an easy winner by a length from Progress, who heat Lord Bnrgldey by half a length. The others came in in the following order Lothair, Richmond, Chester, Auckland, Martindalc, Mala, Rivciton, Wandering Jew, Rivalry, Totalisator, First Water, Napper Tandy, Secundus, Rothechikl, Woodlands, Elastic, Banter, Bosworth ; Darriwell • absolutely last. Grand Flaneur was ridden by Hales, who also rode him for the Derby ; Progress by St Albans, Lord Burglily by Pigott, and Mata by Clifford. There was tremendous cheering over the result. The time was very good, bnt three seconds longer than last year’s. The ring is heavily hit, us the winner

was backed for a good many doubles, but not so much as if Mata, Progress, or Lord Burghlcy had won. Grand Flaneur has never yet been beaten.
