A FIGHT FOR A PUBLIC PARK.
[By Telegraph.] Napier, Oct. 16. A monster petition is being got up, praying the Government to cancel the
recent Ordcr-in-Council re the application of the Jockey Club’s committee and members of the Domain Board for the old racecourse reserve. For years the reserve has been in the hands of the Jockey Club, and it has not been used for recreation. From the constitution of the newly created Board it is feared that the town will lose, what in other hands, would be a valuable park. The greatest indignation is expressed at the advice which has actuated the Government in the matter. The petition prays that the reserve should be vested in the Corporation of Napier. The “ Herald” says the whole thing is a squabble between Racing Clubs and Jockey Clubs. The “ Telegraph” contradicts this, and says the next elections for Napier will hinge on this reward, which the town has received for supporting the Government.
