OPENING UP THE NATIVE TERRITORY.

■IOO,OOO AGUES THROWN OPEN. [l3v Telegraph.] Aucklaxh, July 1.1. The Native Land Court at Cambridge is about to close its proceedings, which will have a great effect in advancing the prosperity of Auckland. About 400,000 acres of laud have been dealt with,

comprising an immense stretch of country.in the Upper Waikato district, and extending to Tanpo and over into the Tanranga district. The blocks which have been under the review of the Court have been Whata and Taiwan ui comprising 14-0,000 acres. No part of this is subject to the Government proclamation prohibiting all dealings so that purchasers will ' have no difficulty to deal with. Paul of Orakei has written a letter protesting against the Native Land Sales Bill. Ho says if this law is made it will certainly involve the destruction murder and plunder of the Maori people. He urges that legislation like this has never been made for European lands, and that the same law should regulate Maori lands. He adds;—ln 1867 I placed my lands for sale to Europeans in the same manner as is mentioned in the Act, The land, viz., GOOD acres, was put up to auction, but all the money realised was eaten up by charges for selling by auction, survey, roads, advertising, and settlement of the business by solicitors. The outcome to us, who were the owners of the land, was about £2OOO.
