The very meagre account given in the Christchurch papers of yesterday’s demonstration requires considerable filling in. Nearer 600 than 200 sat down to the banquet, and although a large crowd assembled opposite the ball during the overling, not the slightest disturbance took place. A strong body of police relieved each other every hour, and patrolled the town until everything was quiet. Only a few drunks were rim in (luring the night, and these were in no way connected with the demonstration. The extra police and visitors left town Ibis morning. Exhibits consisting of pictures,woodwork and leather models, arc being received in the drill-shed to-day, for the industrial exhibition. The machinery is being erected in the adjoining shed. The alterations and decorations in the main building arc nearly finished, and it will then present an interesting and pleasing appearance. The exhibition is expected to prove a great success.
