WALKING MATCH.
A walking match took place at the Odd-fellows’ Hall, Waimate, last evening, between Young Gleeson, and D. 11. Buckingham, D. Buckingham, and H. Buckingham. Gleeson gave the older Buckingham, one mile in thirteen, and the younger members of the family half a mile. The course was marked out by three gentlemen of the town, and the number of laps was given as 35 to the mile. A start was made at 8 o’clock, and the walking was spirited throughout, Gleeson completing his thirteenth mile in six and a-half minutes less than two hours, and the Buckinghams covering a distance of llj| miles in the same time. O’Connor also gave a few spurts. There was a tolerably good house, but had people anticipated such a
performance there is no doubt that the building would have been crowded. The first mile was completed in 7 minutes, the. second in 74 minutes, the third in 8 minutes, and the last in 8 minutes 55 seconds!: At the conclusion Mr Gleeson offered to dance A > hornpipe, but no person could be found to play the piano and consequently this part of the performance was not given.
