TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
A meeting of the Tiinaru High School Board of Governors was held this morning at the Education Board offices. Present —Rev. W. Gillies in the chair, Messrs Bclficld, Sutter (Mayor), Howell, R. A. Chisholm, Barker, and the Revs. Barclay and Dawson. The object of the meeting was to confer with the Rev. Mr Dawson, concerning the preliminaries in connection with the opening of the new High School. The Chairman intimated in opening the proceedings that the total amount of the building contract for the new High School was £4596 19s Gd. The Chairman then proceeded to read the draft report drawn up by Mr Chisholm and himself and submitted to the Minister of Education, in accordance with section 8 of the Timarn High School Act. The report referred to the appointment of the Rev. Mr Dawson as Principal of the High School, of Mr Stewart as second master, and of Miss Jardine, as Lady Superintendent. It was proposed that the school be available for both boys and girls, the fees to be ten guineas per annum, families, eight guineas each member. The School to be opened in February next. The report was approved. The Chairman then read the estimates for school furniture, fittings, &c., amounting to £373 ss, and it was afterwards resolved to add an additional £l3O, for the purchase of scientific appliances, for scholastic purposes, thus making a total of £SOO. The llcv. Mr Barclay suggested that a certain sum be laid aside for the purchase of scholarships and prizes. Some discussion took place relative to this step, several gentlemen present being of opinion that the proposal was premature. The question then dropped. The recommendations of the Building Committee were then discussed, and ultimately it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Bclficld, seconded by Mr Howell, “That the suggestions of the Building Committee he adopted, with the exception of the tank, the estimated cost of which was £43 10s.” It was further resolved that the name of Mr R. A. Chisholm be added to the Building Committee. The question of fixing the school hours was then discussed at some length, and ultimately it was resolved, “ That the Timarn High School open at 10 a.m. and close at 4 p.m.,” an interval of one hour in the middle of the day being allowed for lunch. It was also resol veil that the regular holidays be at midsummer and mid winter, with special holidays at Easter, and one day at the end of each quarter. Also, that the fees be paid quarterly in advance. It was then resolved that, in case of applications for admission to the Timarn High School, the Rector be requested to satisfy himself that the preliminary examination of the candidate does not full lower than Standard 111. It was further resolved that a committee consisting of the Chairman, the Rev Mr Barclay, and Mr Belfield, be appointed to draw up the curriculum in connection with the school, and report to the Board ; and also that the railway
authorities be written to and requested to alter the arrangements in connection with Pleasant Point, Temuka, and Waimate trains to enable the children to attend the Timaru High School. After some further discussion the Board adjourned.
