LEVELS ROAD BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of the above Board was held to-day. Present—Messrs Beswick (chairman), J. Macintosh, Mee, and Shaw, CORRESPONDENCE, From Mr Moody, apologising for absence from the meeting. From the Secretary to the Treasury, remitting ,£676 11s 2d, being the portion of the Geraldine Council’s funds due to the Road Board. A petition was received from a number of ratepayers at the Washdyke, calling attention to the unsafety of a bridge near James Rogers’, and asking that repairs be made at once. Referred to the Overecr. From James Balfour, asking for an outlet from section 25,648, as he was unable to get a reaper to his crop. From W. Rutherford, calling attention to the state of the road at the Levels shepherds’ storehouse and farmstead, From A. Daly, Pleasant Point, asking for a road to be opened at reserve 1209, The various applications were referred to the overseer. VALUATION. ’ The valuer submitted his .report of the valuation together with thajjtollsj shewing a total of £68,960 11s f«if This was a decrease of about £5,000 oh last years valuation but the members of the Board considered the valuation a fair one considering the effect of recent taxation on the property of the district. Mr C. Wright, overseer, reported rc Mr J. Clayton’s application for bridge on the Seadown property that tiio creek was on a. road which did not belong to the Hoard. The contract for protective works at Tengawai bridge was completed. Some damages caused by the heavy rain to the road from Robinson’s to the Cave had been repaired. An agreement bad been made with Mr Frew to enable the public to cross the Opilii river near the railway bridge, and the necessary protective works had been let to Mr Spillane for £l4O. The river had encroached on the road near Carter’s, and it was suggested that arrangements should be made with the Levels Company for part of the land. A portion of the approach to the Pareora bridge bad been washed away, but was repaired. The overseer recommended that tenders be called for the ford and footbridge on the Washdyke Flat road in place of the bridge washed down. It was resolved that the Government Surveyor be requested to lay off the road from Newton’s to The Brothers. The tender of J. Cartwright, £65, was accepted for Contract No. 1, Brassall’s road.
Accounts amounting to £lO5 11s 8d were passed for payment. It was resolved to advertise the valuation lists open for inspection. The following resolution was also carried —“ That notice be given to the Ranger that his services will not be further required and that he bo paid the full six months.” The Board went into Committee on the County Separation question, when it was decided —“ That the Levels Road Board regret the action taken by the members of the Levels Riding of the County of Geraldine in bringing the Counties’ Act into force against the general wish of the ratepayers.” “ That the Chairman obtain the Solicitor’s opinion as. to whether it is necessary to get a fresh petition forwarded to "Wellington, re Separation of the County, and if so to employ the necessary labour,” The Board then adjourned.
