"Expensive taxi ride"
George Wayne Bowring, 39, beneficiary of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified in Queen Street, Raetihi on 24 May. Bowring had decided to drive members of his family to a birthday party because there was "a crazy" abroad in Raetihi and he wanted to ensure their safety at that time of night (7.40pm). Asked how far he had to drive to the address at which the party was being held, Bowring said that the distance was about 300 metres at which Judge Ross suggested Bowring could have escorted them on foot knowing that he was a disqualified driver. In convicting and fining the defendant $200, court costs $95, Judge Ross said it had been a "very expensive taxi ride". In addition to the fine Bowring was disquali-fied for a further six months following the expiry of the current period of disqualification in January 1999.
