Busy time on the Whanganui

The Bridge to Nowhere section of the Mangapurua Track in Whanganui National Park has been busy in the holiday period, following the building of bridge sections in spring after parts of the track dropped away . Also in good condition is the Matemateonga Track, although there are some windfalls. DOC staff are making irregular jetboat patrols to check on pass compliance and these have revealed an unacceptable level of people using national park facilities but not

purchasing tickets prior to departure. They have been sold passes with a $10 penalty added. The river is low and clean and very busy. Several large groups left from Taumarunui last week, making the most of what's left of the school holidays. There are about 130 people a day on the river and hut wardens are busy. There is good fishing and swimming in the Whanganui River. However, fishing in the Rangitikei River is not good with very changeable weather, often four seasons in one day. Tracks in the Mangaweka area are dry and very busy.
