Lahar lost park bridges replaced

Bridges over the Mangatoetoenui and Whangaehu rivers were re placed recently, after lahars destroyed them during Mt Ruapehu' s September 1995 eruption. The Department of Conservation decided to replace the bridge near the Waihohonu hut at the same time, said Dave Lumley, Turangi field centre manager. Stanley Construction of Matamata built the bridges and they were then trucked to

the Desert Road. Sixteen metres long and weighing three tons , the Whangaehu bridge which spans a gorge, needed a large helicopter to get it into the park. The Mangatoetoenui bridge was slightly smaller at 14 metres. Wayne Pratt from Taupo used his Mil-8 helicopter to fly the three bridges into position, where DoC staff bolted them into place. Mr Lumley said the project had been delayed several times because of weather and the mountain's continuing eruptions.
