Owhango dump site picked for transfer station
Owhango' s rubbish transfer site looks likely to be on the old dump site. The Ruapehu District Council' s environmental asset manager Suzienne Slegers has recommended that the site be used, stating the local community had indicated that they preferred the site. In her report to the National Park Community Board which is to decide the matter tomorrow, she
states that the land is the correct zone; that a lease document was being drafted and that design works and preparation of the construction contract document under way. She said the transfer station is expected to open in October. Sites also considered but opposed by those residents who attended a public meeting included: the pound; Kawautahi Road; the ex-depot site; private
land in Ohoeka Street and some road reserve sites. Private land on Ohoeka Street was unsuitable because of costs of land and road improvements During discussions with the landowner of the dump site in 1995, the owner indicated that he was not prepared to extend the lease, but at the public meeting held on 16 May the owner stated that he would be prepared to consider extending the lease.
