Art for conservation week

Three art competitions are planned for local schools as part of Conservation Week, 31 July 4 August. The three competitions will be run at Ohakune, Raetihi and Orautoha primary schools. The competitions feature a local river that looks bare and lifeless. Ohakune' s river for the competition is the Mangateitei, Raetihi ' s is the Makotuku and Orautoha' s is the Manganui a Te Ao. Children will be asked to draw in all the creatures and plants that should live in and near the river. They also have to define in a special box, what 'biodiversity' is. The competitions are sponsored by the Ohakune Motor Camp and Turoa Ski Resort. The senior children from Ohakune Primary School are once again undertaking to plant about 300 trees in Jubilee Park in

Ohakune, adding to the planting carried out last year. Also, the Maungarongo Marae Kura Kaupapa children will be planting trees in a nursery crop at the marae. When the trees are old enough they will be planted out around the marae.
