Art for cash's sake

Artists of all ilk will have the opportunity to have their work displayed for all to see, and vie for $5000 in prize money, in the 1 7th annual Ohakune Art Awards which opens on Sunday 3 September. Since its founding in 1978, the awards have grown in scope and stature and rank today as one of the most notable provincial art exhibitions in the country. The show generates a wide interest with artists resident between Levin in the south and Hamilton in the north eligible to exhibit. Entries are invited in several categories; oil, water colour, other medium and life study. A local award, open to all artists resident in the Ruapehu District and sponsored by

the Ruapehu District Council, is also made. There is also a young artist award which attracts increasing interest and attention from secondary schools, polytechnics and any students up to and including 1 8 years of age. Prize monies to the value of $5000 are made across the various categories with the 'Elizabeth Baigent Memorial Award' being of $2000. The organisers said they are grateful to the Baigent family for the continuing sponsorship. Details of the 1995 exhibition and entry forms are available from public libraries and the convener Ellen Gould, 49A Arawa Street, Ohakune.
