Tongariro fire risk reduced

Department of Conservation firefighters are breathing a sigh Of relief following the recent heavy rain in the Tongariro Taupo Conservancy. Chief FireOfficer Dave Lumley, said it has been a particularly busy fire season with nine small fires in the Tongariro Forest - Waituhi area alone. "Most of the fires have been the result

of lightning strikes," Mr Lumley said. "We' re very pleased that the recent rain has not been associated with electrical storms." In spite of the reduced fire risk, fire training continues for DoC staff over the next few months. "Fire fighting is the number-one priority for all staff regardless of their designation," he said.
