Tangiwai Memorial upgrade suggested
The Tangiwai Memorial area should be resurfaced and up-graded to cater for the increased traffic usage, Ruapehu District Council
area south engineer Don Sattler recommended in his report to the Waimarino Community Board last Thursday.
His report stated that there has been extensive deterioration of the existing sealed surface caused by increasing vehicular usage to both the access road and turn-round area and by the large number of buses, truck and trailer units which are now using the area as a rest stop. The estimated cost of resurfacing and up-grading including a sealed parking
area defined by half-round posts, but not including kerb and channel, is $24,500. Board member John Compton said that the Tangiwai Memorial was "a national memorial and part of our national heritage" and, as such, the cost of any up-grading should be shared by other organisations such as New Zealand Rail, Transit New Zealand, Historic Places Trust etc." Board member Ellen
Gould agreed that the Ruapehu District Council should not have to provide all the funding for the proposed re-surfacing and upgrading of the memorial site. Board members agreed that Council should pursue other (national) sources to continue with further development and seek funding for the Tangiwai Memorial site.
