Waimarino rural culverts cause concern

Waimarino Community Board member, Winston Oliver, expressed concern about the state of some of the culverts on rural roads when the board met in Ohakune last Thursday. "I'm not very happy", he said when he told fellow Board members about some culverts which had been blocked for up to nine months before they were cleared. "Historically we always had a roadman who would travel around the district clearing culverts and drains on a regular basis but now we have culverts and drains blocked for months causing all sorts of other problems affecting our rural roads," he said. Board member Ben Goddard said that the Ruapehu District Council was not responsible nor was its staff at fault because the council now contracts all such work out to an independent contractor (Ruapehu Construction Limited) and they (the contractors) are being paid to perform ... and should do so".
