New club aims for sports commitment

A new sports club founded for young people within the Ruapehu district has been formed - The Young Guns Sports Club. Organisers Kenneth Young and John Heron hope to provide a positive and professional commitment to sport for teenagers within the Ruapehu area. At present the club has focussed on touch rugby with two teams competing in Waiouru on Wednesday nights and a mixed team also playing on Friday nights in Ohakune. The club has 20 fmancial members with 16 currently attending Ruapehu College. Support from local employers has been great, says club president John (Buck) Heron with Winstones WPI Ltd being the contributors. Every month the club is able to present awards to individual members who display excellent commitment and a positive attitude towards other | team members and the club. Friday 3 December was the first of many monthly presentations with John MclLroy being the guest speaker. The

night was very successfiil especially the pot luck dinner. The awards presented were: Berry Bookshop Player of the month, Paul Callaghan who also received a $15 voucher; Ohakune Butchery most improved mixed player, Tina Bishop ($15 voucher); Dew Drop Inn most improved mens player, George Taura ($15 voucher); Wellington Cafe most dedicated club member, Morwenna Herewini ($ 1 0 voucher) ; Young Guns best and fairest club player, Willy Sutton who also received a rugby ball; Young Guns clown of the month, Shanita Bishop who also received the 1 0-gallon club hat. The night proved to be a great success and a good way to celebrate the final day for school certificate exams. The club will take a mixed touch team to Taumarunui on 10 December to compete in a day tournament. It is hoped the players will learn from the extra games and continue to improve and mature as players and club members. Mr Heron said the club would like to thank alf supporters and sponsors.
