"Prison sentence likely"

Ivan Christopher Hall, 45, shearer of Raetihi, appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting Teuila Hall on 3 July. Before passing sentence Judge Watson said that he agreed with defence counsel Paul Brown's submission that the relationship between defendant and his wife had "been a very rocky one over the past 15-years with the problems revolving around alcohol use by both defendant and complainant who was already barred from one local hotel." Defendant was convicted and fined $600, court costs $95 and sentenced to nine months supervision so that

he could undergo alcohol counselling. Judge Watson added that it might be a good idea if defendant' s wife did the same. He told defendant that any further assaults would make a prison sentence likely.
