Mumps invades Waiouru

By!

Monaghan

The Mumps epidemic sweeping the country has hit Waiouru. Primary school children have been hit the hardest as a lot of them have not been immunised. Children now automatically get a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) at 15 months as part of the free immunization programme. The vaccine was introduced at 15 months in 1991 so children over four may not be covered and parents are advised to check with their health nurse. Public Health Nurse Jeannette Osborne said that 1 1 year olds have had the choice of having an MMR vaccine since 1992. The MMR vaccine is available through the civilian surgery. The incubation period for mumps is from 14 to 21 days and mumps are infectious for nine days after the first symptoms appear. Symptoms can include headaches, high temperature, pain and then swelling of the jaw in front of the ear. If you suspect mumps Mrs Osborne said that as it is a febrile illness (associated with high temperatures), it is recommended to go to the doctor for and advice.
