Bosnia troops parade in Palmerston
W aiouru soldiers deploying to Bosnia took part in a civic farewell parade held in Palmerston North last Wednesday. The farewell parade was the first seen in Palmerston North in over 50 years, said one war veteran. Another veteran, Bill Lochore, said the last parade that affected him like this one was in Sydney,
Australia in 1952. "It reminded me of when we marched through Sydney. Fifteen hundred Aussies and 200 Kiwis. That was when we were on the way to Korea. This was the best parade in all those years. Their drill was spot on." Most of the 250 soldiers deploying to Bosnia took part in the parade wearing
the United Nations light blue beret and UN insignia. Traffic in the square came to a standstill and crowds of people clapped and cheered as the soldiers marched by. After the parade soldiers
joined war veterans and members of the Palmerston North Returned Services Association for refreshments. The Palmerston North RSA were responsible for organising the pa-
rade. The advance party has left for Bosnia and the remainder are due to fly out of New Zealand mid-Sep-tember. About 60 Waiouru soldiers are deploying.
