Ruapehu well represented in Rangitikei squad
Ruapehu players dominated last week's Rangitikei school boy representative rugby trials in Taihape, with seven talented local players selected for the squad. They were: Jason Waerea (Ohakune), Tony McLean (Raetihi), Aaron James (Waiouru), Quinton Gordon (Raetihi), Stuart Hammond (Orautoha), Clay Winters (Raetihi), and Thomas Journeaux (Raetihi). Forty triallists, from the Ruapehu region to as far south as Bulls, converged on the Taihape rugby grounds last Wednesday where a squad of 22 was selected. All players are aged 1 3 years and under and must weigh less than 54kg. The team will be spending the next four weeks training, in a lead-up to the inter-provincial tournament in W anganui
held 29 August. Teams from Taranaki, Wanganui and the Manawatu will come head to head during the quadrangular tournament. A series of training games are scheduled between now and the tournament. The team travels to Hunterville for a practice this Saturday, with a match against a Dannevirke team on Sunday. On August 7 they come up against a Napier team at the Taihape grounds. On Wednesday 1 0 August they come up against a full King Country team at Raetihi, with a game against Central Hawkes Bay, at Bulls, on Sunday 21 August. From there the players go to a training camp at Hunterville from 22-25 August, then play Horowhenua in a final match before the tournament.
