Continual water main faults cause concern

Faulty water mains in Raetihi and Ohakune should be replaced under a .programmed approach rather than waiting for them to fail. That was the sugges-

tion of Waimarino Community B oard member John Compton at their meeting last week.. He said apart from the inconvenience of having the

mains fail, it was dangerous. He cited a recent fire in Raetihi where the main failed soon after the fire was pulout. If a main failed

during a fire it would be a disaster, he said. The board heard that most of the two town's water mains were of asbestos cement. This material was prone to cracking problems,

where the pipes may have been dropped during handling before being installed. Sometimes the cracks, invisible at.the time of installation, did not gi ve way until 10 years later.
