Mainstreet things happening
Interesting things are happening within the Ohakune/Raetihi Mainstreet project. Last year's community competition to select a name in order for Mainstreet' s Ohakune and Raetihi to have their own identity, attracted a lot of interest. Organisers said that a number of interesting ideas were received and obviously a lot of thought and care went into these presentations. Community Board members were also asked to share their ideas and offer opinions. Kathy Horne of Ohakune came up with the overall favourite of 'Winning Waimarino.' Mrs Horne said the title gives iden- „ tity, history, place and ties Ohakune and Raetihi together. "People like to see things happening and this will happen with 'Winning Waimarino'", said Mr s Horne. Another winner, Penny McGill, is responsible for creating the design that will be printed on this area's promotional Tshirts and sweat shirts. The design reflects the area's heritage, culture, nature, acti vities and future; farming, forestry, hunting, skiing, tramping,
rivers, mountains and lakes - all in the colours of nature. Penny came to New Zealand from the Falkland Islands over 27 years ago and settled in Levin for a number of years. She came to Ohakune over 3 1/2 years ago and feels that the relaxed lifestyle and new challenges that the region offers has made her feel that it is now horne. She has four children with ages varying from 12 through to 24. Herinterestsinclude a great love of nature and an intense interest in people. Penny' s says her reason for entering the competition was for the challenge. "It was an interesting challenge to think up a logo design", she said. Penny loves the area and wants to see people enjoying the mountains, rivers, and the many other acti vities that occur all year round. Mainstreet intend to copy-right the design and print a range of T-shirts, sweat shirts and commercial products with the royalties going to 'Winning Waimarino.' Winners of the competition will be dined at the Hobbit.
