Ford Escort versus Police Falcon

Claus Joseph Becker, 37, painter of Rangataua, pleaded guilty to one charge of dartgerous driving and to

one charge of driving with excess breath alcohol (750/ 1 ) on the Dreadnought Road at 3.50am on 3 October. B ecker told the Court that while driving home in his blue Ford Escort after drinking in Ohakune he had seen the police car behind him and attempted to accelerate away. Judge Watson asked somewhat incredulously "you mean that you expected to outrun a police car in your Ford Escort?" Becker admitted that alcohol had affected his judgement and it was a foolish thing to do. After crashing into a roadside embankment he had acknowledged to police: "I'm busted". He was convicted and sentenced to 1 20 hours community service and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
