Landowners and other interested parties recently sought a meeting with the Waiouru Community Board to discuss the amount of water being channelled from the Upper Whangaehu River tributaries and the Moawhango River for use in the Tongariro Power Scheme. Of specific concern is the recent reduction in water taken from the Upper Whanganui River which has resulted in an increase in the amount of water being taken from the Moawhango Reservoir. The low level of water in the reservoir has led Waiouru landowners to question the use of the water on the eastern side of Mt. Ruapehu to compensate for the shortfall in the west. As a result, last week's meeting of the Waiouru Community Board made a recommendation that the Waiouru landowners' concerns be brought to the attention of the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand. Other matters Other recommendations, which will be made to the Ruapehu District Council, arising from the meeting include the change in position of the
70kph sign at the south end of town to its gazetted position a further 35m to the south. The Waiouru Community Board also wishes to have the 70kph zone reduced to a 50kph zone, mainly because oi the numbers of children who cross SH1 each day going to and from school. The decision was also made to let tenders for the proposed upgrade of the public toilet block situated between the Caltex Truckstop and Fast Lane, in the Waiouru township.
