BY CONSTABLE CHRIS SCALES The start of another year and we would like to welcome everyone back. I am sure that everyone had a good holiday and are ready to tackle the new year. The support that you all gave myself, Pat and Peter last year was tremendous and we hope that it will continue this year. • Over the Christmas period, it was extremely quiet crime-wise, however the traffic on the roads was the heaviest that we have ever seen. Despite the heavy volume of traffic, only one accident occured. A woman motorcycle pillion passenger suffered moderate injuries on Boxing Day, when the motorcycle crashed at the top of the Taihape devia-
tion. Two other non-in-jury accidents occured after this day, but not during the official holiday period. • A speed blitz campaign was carried out over the holiday period in our area in conjunction with Taumarunui and Wanganui Staff. During a seven-day period over 160 motorists were issued speeding tickets, with some speeds being recorded at 165 kmph. Although the drink-driv-ing message seems to be hitting home, speeding still seems to be a worrying factor on the Desert. Speed kills, as we well found out towards the end of last year. The majority of accidents we attend could mostly be attributed to speed and we will continue to be especially hard on offenders. • On the subject of drink-driving, no locals have been prosecuted for drink-driving for some time. This is pleasing and obviously reflects the changing attitudes towards drinking and driving in our community. However, we are starting to notice too many local vehicles parked outside the drinking establishments until late. Be warned, a blitz is planned soon. Don't be the first for 1993. • We are also going to come down heavy on registrations and warrants of fitness. Enough was said on the subject last year and several people have already been growled at. Please get them attended to by the end of this month. As from next month, no warnings.
• Last Saturday, in the early hours, a man suffered minor lacerations after being hit on the head with a beer bottle at the Oasis Hotel. The incident was a domestic one and the matter is being handled by the Military Police. • Last week, two young girls were stopped in the housing area, carrying home a lovely potted plant for mum that they found in the tree line at the end of Ballance Road. I'm sure Mum would have been thrilled to bits to be given a nice healthy cannabis plant. I am sure the rightful owner does not wish to report the missing plant, but he, or she is more than welcome to come to the station to discuss the matter. • An extraordinary
number of push-bikes get reported lost or stolen and security in this area needs to be tightened up. The Military Police are holding over 30-bikes, and we are holding a lime-green and white Milanzo Roadrunner. If you are missing a bike, see the MPs or ourselves. • On a final note, if any of you cockies out there have any number 8 wire lying around, we would appreciate it if you could drop some off at the station for Constable Peter Thomas. He exhausted his supply last week trying to get into his locked patrol car, complete with keys inside and all radios etc still on. A recharged battery would be helpful to! • Have a safe week.
