More water, more power
Greater minimum flows in the Whakapapa River should mean at least one generator will be able to be run continuously at the Piriaka Power Station on the Whanganui River, the December King Country Energy board meeting was told. The Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) has begun observing the new minimum flow regime which requires a three cumec minimum flow in the Whakapapa, compared with the previous 0.6 cumec flow.
River flows during September were above the minimum and King Country Energy is awaiting October and November figures, to see what difference the extra flow will make. The run-of-river station has only been able to operate in a "stopstart" fashion, since the diversion of the Whanganui and Whakapapa head-waters into the Tongariro Power Development in the mid1970's, and compensation has been paid for loss of generation by ECNZ.
