Chalet squatters help themselves

A group of Wellington skiers arrived at their rented chalet on Friday night to find it already occupied. The four people squatting at the property quickly left the chalet but did not leave names or details, said Waimarino police sergeant Bob Evans. Mr Evans warns chalet owners to be careful who they let their properties to. He said in this case it was possible the chalet owners had rented to someone else, who had later let the others in.

The squatters hadspent several days at the chalet using the owner's food and bedding, and "making merry at the owner's expense". "This sort of thing is not that infrequent," said Mr Evans. He said once people had rented a chalet and found where the owner hides the keys, they then return to help themselves. "People should try to arrange for someone locally to look after their chalets," said Mr Evans. "Doh't leave the keys where someone can easily get access to them."
