T.O. saviour from freeze

A trip up the Ohakune Mountain Road could have ended in death for a Johnsonville, Welling-

ton man last Friday, but for the actions of traffic officer Ian Harrison. The man had driven up

the road on Friday afternoon despite the road being closed at the nine kilometre mark, with the barrier down. On his way back down the man's car skidded off the road and into a snow bank where it was immobilized. A spur of the moment decision to drive up the road by Mr Harrison led to him finding the man trying to dig out his car with a ski pole at about 6pm. "If it weren't for Ian the man could have been dead in the morning," said Waimarino Police sergeant Bob Evans. He said weather conditions were extreme with heavy snow falls with strong winds and the man was only lightly clothed. "He probably would have been able to walk back to town, but the potential was there for disaster." "If the barrier is down,

the road is closed and for a reason. People should not go up the road," said Mr Evans.
