Soccer hopefuls

The coach of Raetihi's junior soccer team, Russell Munn, has had several of his players selected for a short list of possibles for the Tongariro representative team. They are Robert Speers, Luke Cranston, Daniel Forster, Christopher Bennett, Rowan Kui, Sam Pope, Tony MacLean and Amy Cranston.

Amy has the distinction of being the first girl ever to be put forward for final selection. Every second weekend these players travel to Turangi for special coaching with Eddie Nordell. Here they undergo an intensive training programme with other young hopefuls from the region. The final selection takes place on 12 July. At the end of August the representative team ,will be spending a week in Tokoroa. Here they will be representing the Tongariro area against regions from all over New Zealand.
