Valley closed
The area known as Long Valley, or zone 25, has been closed for vehicle access and live firing activities. Camp commander Colonel Clive Sinclair said he has followed the guide-lines recommended in the recent Land Use Implementation Study. He said the army has recently cleaned up Long Valley, removing targets, rubbish, ammunition and car hulks (targets) and had a burn off to remove live ammunition. The area is closed to allow tussock and grass to grow and
rejuvenate. Two years has been allowed for this to happen. Colonel Sinclair said Long Valley has not been cleaned out for about 35-40 years and this is the first time that he is aware of an area that has closed for this purpose. Long Valley is a constricted and confined area of two square kilometres and was popular for the live firing of rockets, grenades and other high explosive projectiles. The suggested zone to use now is zone 19. Captain Van Der Ent said although the area is now restricted to vehicle access and live firing activities, foot access is allowed providing applicants are cleared.
