No more car regos in Raetihi

BY

RIC

Raetihi vehicle owners now have to travel to Ohakune to register their vehicles. The agents for New Zealand Post in Raetihi are the Ruapehu District Council who were able to accept vehicle registration for the Ministry of Transport until this month. But all registration transactions now go on a computer that can be up dated there and then, and the Raetihi office does not have on-line computer facilities at Raetihi. Ruapehu Mayor, Garrick Workman and the General Manager of the District Council Cliff Houston, travelled to Palmerston North to try to negotiate the continued registration agency but were unsuccessful. Road user fees can still be paid at Raetihi however, said Mr Workman. He said there were fears that the service would also be lost from Ohakune but that the service would remain there. New Zealand Post's new computer system only allowed for 250 terminals, said Mr Workman, but there were more than 270 Post Shops in the country. This may mean the extra Post Shops may close. The new vehicle registration system is designed for faster database updating which is hoped to aid crime pre- " vention.
