SINCE AMALGAMAtion on November 1, 1989 several civic functions have taken place throughout the Ruapehu District. CHARTER PARADES The Freedom of the Borough Ceremony originated in the Middle Ages, where in return for protection by the Local Knight the villagers served him if he was required to go to war in the Service of his King. As Armies developed more, the Freedom
came to mean the recognition between the local unit and the people of the County or towns. In return for the protection in times of emergency the unit was granted The Freedom to enter the town or city with bayonets fixed, flags waving and drums beating. The unit was also allowed with the permission of the city Fathers to recruit amongst the local men to fill the ranks of the unit. In its modern usage the

Ruapehu District Council has been required to review its Charters. On August 23, 1990 the Royal NZ Corp of Transport was presented with a new Charter for the Town of Taumarunui. At Ohakune on October 25, 1991 Mayor Garrick Workman renewed the Charter held by the HMNZS Irirangi for the Freedom of the Town of Ohakune. The Mayor, accompanied by the Parade Commander, inspected the Parade
who then marched down Miro Street and Fnto Clyde Street with drums beating, band playing, colours flying, bayonets fixed and swords drawn. Following the ceremony an exchange of gifts took place. VICEREGAL VISITS Their Excellencies, Sir Paul and Lady Reeves, visited Taumarunui from November 9 to 11 1989. A Vice Regal visit then took place in Raetihi July 12 and 13, 1990. Her Excellency, the Govenor General, Dame
Catherine Tizard, was invited to the Taumarunui district to present awards at the Painting and Photography Landscape Exhibition which was organised by the Taumarunui Visual Arts on October 6, 1991. ANZACPARADES Each year the Anzac Parade is organised by the Ruapehu District Council in conjunction with the Returned Services Association throughout the Ruapehu District.
