Ski racing starts
The competitive ski racing season gets under way at Whakapapa on Saturday 10 August with the Swan Sports Slalom RaCe. Most of the country's
top racers are expected to be there as the race is a N.Z. Ski Association Circuit Race, attracting points for the overall National Title. The Whakapapa Ski
Team has been in training for over a month and Head coach Barry George is expecting good results from his racers. The team had an early on-snow start to training, due to excellent snow and weather conditions, particularly over the MidrTerm break. Local skier Ben Tidswell is in excellent form after his successful season in North America. Other Whakapapa Ski Team members to watch for are Thomas
Jones, Georgie Bremner and Imke Frey. After the Swan Sports Slalom the Team will head south for the South Island circuit at Mt Hutt and Coronet Peak before heading home again to compete in the Mitsubishi Motors national Ski Championships here at Whakapapa in September. The race slope in Te Heu Heu Valley is in excellent condition after the very heavy snow falls of last week, said an RAL spokesperson.
