High country soccer spirit shows

Ruapehu College maintain their seventh place in their league, even after their loss to top of the table East Athletic Cosmos 3-7 in the last game of the first round on 15 June.

College stunned the top team in the league when Duane Dixon latched onto a through

ball and blasted a shot into the opposition goal. From the dizzy heights of being 1-0 up

college were soon put under tremendous pressure by the skillful Wanganui team. The Cosmos team are mainly made up of ex-Central League players and their distribution of. the ball caused the younger side a lot of problems in the slippery conditions. Cosmos gave the col-

lege side a lesson in clinical finishing and led 4-1 at half time. College though, have some determined and spirited players and pulled back two goals in the second half. A change of tactics in the second half saw the younger side match it with their opposition.

Aeneas O'Sullivan was rewarded for his tireless chasing and running with his first senior team goal of the season. The opposition defence lapsed in concentration and found Aeneas a bit too quick for them. He outsprinted the defence and as cool as you like, this promising third former, steered the ball past the keeper. Aei. ^as always made his pr- sence felt up front an Jistracted the opposit ii keeper long enough to allow another Duane Dixon thundershot to seriously impact the opposition goal net. Both sides had many more chances with clearances off the lines and shots which hit the woodwork. The game was played in the fine spirit that has been a feature of most of the College games in the Wanganui League. College now begin the second round, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their Wanganui opposition. College play against City Old Guns, the first of five home games in this round at the college grounds at 2.30pm on Saturday 22 June.
