Nth Wanganui takes back title
BY LINEOUT Many local rugby players from Waiouru, Ohakune and Raetihi went to Taupo to challenge for the prestigious Grace Cup on Sunday which was taken from Northern Wanganui last year. Coach John Transom
had planned this challenge for months so it was a great thrill to win the trophy back. Challenges will now be issued by other sub unions around the mountain; Tongiriro and Taumarunui and these games will probably be played in Raetihi and Ohakune. Of the local players, Brett Sturm made some
brilliant runs through the backline and would have been the star performer but for Tod Barrell's two solo tries in the second half. Hayden Dempsey proved that he is the area's top halfback with his excellent game and Mark Thompson had a good game. Rick Tawhiri played his usual smooth run-
ning style and combined with Wally Lewis look alike, Lachlan Harding to feature in many attacks. Richard Mathews the other local showed his class in the rep team and was able to play his own game. The local team won 34-6. The curtain raiser was not so good for the
local Northern Wanganui Colts team. They lost in the last few minutes when a try was scored. The local players of Tony Bird the Wills brothers and new comer Jason Hulena all played outstandingly. Brian Clarke from Waiouru played a good safe game at full back.
