Waimarino riding club passes

The Saturday before Queen's Birthday five Waimarino riding club members sat and passed their Grade I Riding and three sat and passed their Grade II Riding.

For mid winter the weather in Waiouru was kind, it was only cold and windy with occasional showers, nothing very serious during the riding phases over the three days of Queen's Birthday weekend. On Saturday last week three sat and passed Grooms I, two out of three passed Grade III Riding and the two Grooms II candidates both passed. Sunday afternoon and Monday moming were used as seminar time with the Horse Management Certificate in mind and further work on Grade III as no horses were available up to Grade IV level. Errol O'Brien took the seminars and suggested it was time further clubs organised horse management seminars as there are sufficient members in New Zealand qualified with Grooms II and/or Grooms III to be working towards the horse management certificate. It was disappointing to cancel the North Is-

land seminar due to lack of support but the seminars held were of great benefit to the local pony club plus Karin Kahu who we welcomed from Turangi. A very useful time was spent lunging a rather difficult horse, showing the difference with a horse 'dribbling around' as opposed to working for exercise, and progressive stages to further schooling with side reins. For Grade III work Errol emphasized that candidates must know the syllabus, be able to work in, to a pattem and do progressive exercises towards turn on the forehand and demi pirouettes and be able to assess their own and their change horses' way of going. Horses should be on the bit at all times and can only work properly when they are. In jumping phases, distances and heights for schooling fences must be known and used, said Errol.

In the horse management sections there is no substitute for experience and riding club members new to the horse world should seek experience as much as possible so work can be done safely, quickly and efficiently. Riding certificate results; Grade I Riding; Cindy Collett, Eileen
