One-sided game at Rochfort

BY

LINEOUT

Spectators at Rochfort Park were treated to a one-sided affair when the locals took the city team to the cleaners with a 34-4 win at rugby.

The Marsh Tangaroa led team put up a fine battle but could not match the powef of the Ohakune pack or the born again backline led by Whetu Mareikura. Wanganui Pirates did try to run the ball on

many occasions with veteran Tasi Su'a playing a top defensive game along with Wanganui Colts rep Kevin Lister who scored their only points. March Tangaroa now of Wanganui has a big reputation locally. He gave his opposite

number Frank Matenga (Ohakune) a royal battle at prop but Frank was able to aquit himself well. Richard Lindsey was rewarded with two tries for his hard work in the pack as they cleaned the tall Wanganui team out in the scrums, lineouts and driving game. The new look Ohakune-Karioi backline has picked up a new

comer Jason Hulena, cousin to Tom and Lawrence. Jason, a teacher trainee who is currently in Ohakune seeking work, played on the wing on Saturday and has the same talents as Anthony Callaghan. The former Hawke's Bay age group representative has acceleration, can tackle and is a tactical kicker as he showed on Sunday when he was immediately put into the North-

ern Wanganui Colts side and played at first five in the absence of Callaghan who had a family bereavement. He took control of the rep backline and his presence will strengthen the local backline. On Saturday, with both sides running the ball, Ohakune-Karioi had a far better repertoire and varied their tactics more.

Their efforts to run the ball were surprising considering the cold sticky conditions. Richard Lindsey scored two tries and Terrence McLeod, Richard Mathews and Brendon Wilson scored tries and Lachlan Harding kicked four conversions and two penalties. Lister scored the try for Wanganui Pirates.
