High winds havoc

High winds and lightning were responsible for many power cuts in King Country Energy's area last month. In one case, the winds were so strong that the faultperson responding to an outage at the Tawhai substation at National Park on 23 April thought his vehicle was going to be blown over by the wind. He made several attempts to get out of his vehicle but was unsuccessful, so gave up and went home until the wind died down. Lightning strikes on the main north highway near Ongarue caused outages at 8am and 1pm 27 April, with Ohura area customers having had

similar problems on 24 April. Lightning was also said to be the reason for a power cut at National Park on 30 April and at Waihi/Pukawa the same day. The average time any of the board's 11,802 customers was without power in April was 10.97 minutes.
