Junior Council meets

By

Tanya

Parker

The inaugural meeting of the 1991 Ruapehu (South) Junior Council was held on 30 April and Che Wilson was elected chairperson for a second term. Present at the meeting were mayor Garrick Workman, Deputy mayor Weston Kirton and councillor Ellen Gould. The council, which represents the views of the youth of the district, began by observing one minute of silence for the late Edith Moore who helped set up the junior council. The meeting then began with Mr Workman reading through the constitution of the council, then went on to swear in each council member. Election of officers then took place with Che's deputy being Asharie Perera. Mr Kirton then briefly spoke to the council, commenting on the

commitment and responsibility that junior councillors have to represent people their own age. Mr Workman then went through the functional matters which govem the council. Finally, the council fixed the date and time for each meeting, which is to be every fourth Monday at 4.00pm.
