Ruapehu soccer

Ruapehu College defeated the Wanganui City team two goals to nil on Saturday 18 May to move up one place in the river City Radio League. Ruapehu now move to 7th place above Wanganui Boys College on superior goal difference. Yet to register a win this season, the City side had the locals under a pressure early in the game. Coach John McCartney had rearranged team positions in an effort to add strength to the midfield and attack of the college side. Twenty minutes into the first half, Geoff Pitts put College ahead. Geoff was playing with stitches in his hand from an injury against Boys' College the week before, but snapped up a difficult chance in the six yard area. Aeneas O'Sullivan beat several opposition players and made a good cross from the left to set up Geoff

Pitts' first goal for college. O'Sullivan himself was unlucky not to score, when he headed wide from close range after some tireless and incisive running. College, however, squandered many chances in the slippery conditions and only led 1-0 at half time. The second half followed a similar patten to the first half, missed chances at both ends. College scored the second after a goalmouth scramble, but City never gave up trying. Phillip Hawken gave the visitors a glimmer of hope when he chipped the ball over his own keeper. The ball, however, hit his own crossbar and fell safely into the hands of college keeper, Glen Rodger. The College have the advantage of their third home game in a row this week when they play the lowly placed, but experienced Lada Old Boys on 25 May.
