Faith and fellowship at Hui
The official opening of the Hui Aranga took place on Friday morning. Due to the wet weather the powhiri (welcome) was held in the huge marquee that was set up at the Ruapehu College as a venue for many of the events. Speakers for the tangata whenua were Thompson Tukupua, Poma Waretini, and Morven Simon, who ! spoke on the meaning 'of the hui as he saw it. wno saia tne nui was about faith, fellowship and friendly competition. Speakers for the manuhiri (visitors) were Ben Moke, Kahu Ratana, Rocky Moutere and Joe Waretini. Bishop Max Muriu Takuira spoke and blessed the hui. The first competitions of the weekend were the men's and women's whaikorero (speech) and patere (supporting song) followed by a commemoration of the death of Christ. There were 10 clubs at the hui from North Hokianga to Wellington.
