Ka945, the star of the show on the Main Trunk Line on the weekend, basks in late afternoon sun as well as the admiration of hundreds of steam enthusiasts and local people who turned out to see the train at the Ohakune Junction on Friday. 200 passengers disembarked to stay the night in local motels, and were greeted with a warm welcome from the Preservation of Ohakune Railway Station group, who along with helpers such as the Lions and Ruapehu College pupils had worked hard over recent weeks to smarten up the Junction Station in time for the visit. As they farewelled the passengers on Saturday morning PORS gave each one a bag of 'Kune carrots (courtesy of the local growers) along with some suitable recipes to send them on their way. FOOTNOTE: The goodwill generated by the hard work of the PORS group was undermined by the pointless theft of the engine's train control radio in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police said the radio, while it cost over $3000 to the group of volunteers who operate the train, is useless to anyone but railway users. They would appreciate the return of the radio, anonymous if necessary.
