Extra duck season

The first special Waimarino paradise shelduck hunting season opened on Saturday. The season has been run in Wanganui for two years, this year extended to the Waimarino. It runs from 2 to 17 March inclusive, hours from 6.30am to 7.30pm. The season is to increase the hunters' opportunities and to relieve a problem with the species fouling paddocks when they congregate. Only small numbers of the ducks have been shot in past Wanganui seasons but the ducks, which congregate to moult in summer, disperse more quickly than they otherwise would.
